'MIRACULOUS' IN BAYONNE
'Weeping' art stationed at church 3 days
Saturday, September 17, 2005
The "Miraculous, Myrrh-weeping icon of St. Anna"will be stationed at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Sophia in Bayonne from tomorrow through Tuesday.
Several miracles have been attributed to the painting - which purportedly weeps streams of myrrh - during the past year as it traveled to several churches around the country, according to a church press release.
The painting was commissioned in 1998 and painted in Gethsemene by the Mount of Olives convent in Jerusalem. Before being brought to the United States the painting was blessed at Jesus' tomb in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, according to the press release. St. Sophia Church, located at 39 West 22nd Street, will hold numerous services during the three-day visit.
Archbishop Antony of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States will officiate at a prayer service on Monday at 7 p.m. where worshipers can be anointed with the myrrh from the icon. Anointing will also take place at 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, at 8 a.m. on Monday and at noon on Tuesday.
The church will be open to visitors from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, and from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
